I made this afghan when I was starting to crochet again, after a 25 year hiatus. I learned to crochet as a child, but never made much. I may post a picture of the one small blanket I made, once we move and I can find it again - lol.

In February 2002, I'd been cleaning out my grandma's basement with her and I was inspired by the bits of her old crocheting projects we found there. I decided to attempt an afghan, but was quite nervous about making the commitment - didn't want to be tied down by any expectations!

I asked my mother-in-law to teach me how to make a simple afghan, and she did so, giving me some old balls of leftover yarn to practice with, before I began the afghan in earnest, using new and beautiful yarn. By the time I'd practiced enough to be comfortable crocheting, I had too much done to just abandon the project. I bought yarn that matched the old colors as much as possible, and completed the afghan - my first!

I've since become a crocheting junkie - can't even go anywhere without it and can't seem to find time to read any more with all the crocheting to be done - lol.

This afghan is all single crochet, some random worsted weight acrylic yarns, and took about 100 hours to make. It's about the size of a twin bed.

Thanks for looking!

Awesome! I have yet to do any kind of blanket; my Eleanor stole is the closest thing to one and it's taking me forever!

~drakonlily: alright, I'll say it. I missed your pretty boys.

~drakonlily to ~Sorda: Well, I may make you play your namesake, for the sake of her being your namesake.

This looks pretty sweet. You did an awesome job with the stripes.

Just wondering, about how many skeins of yarn did you use on this? I've always wanted to crochet an afghan, but I don't want to start one unless I have enough money for all the yarn.

That's completely ridiculous.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it! I don't think beginning with blankets was my best idea ever, but it's what I did :).

Hmmm, an Eleanor stole sounds interesting. I don't know what it is, but I look forward to seeing it :).
Thanks! I'm glad you like it.

Unfortunately, I don't know how much yarn I used 'cause I didn't work off a pattern and I made it four years ago. If I wanted to predict how much I'd need, I'd probably check out a ripple afghan pattern like one of the following two [link]
and figure out from that how much yarn I'd need.

Good luck! I look forward to seeing pictures of your afghan soon ;)!
Ooh, the Eleanor stole is from the book Scarf Style by Pam Allen. It's SO pretty.

I'll look into that. I think this'll give me something to work on when I go back to school.

Awwwwww... the old ripple river pattern, haven't made one of those for years and years! Good job!

One man's junk is another man's treasure...
Haha I went on a croceting hiatus, too. I put it down when I was five, but I still have the yarn. ^.^

Great blanket. The zigzags are great!
